The DVSA has launched the new reminder service to help drivers make sure that they stay up to date with their MOT test requirements via text and email reminders.
The new service alerts drivers:
- Four weeks before the MOT is required
- Two weeks before the MOT is required
- When the MOT has expired
All drivers need to sign up for the new service is the vehicle registration and an email address or mobile phone number. Sign up can be completed at the Governments on-line sign up website.
The new service is designed to improve the current situation where around 28% of vehicles will have an overdue MOT Certificate at any one time and the DVSA recognises that whilst driving a vehicle without a current MOT is an offence, the majority of those who fail to renew the MOT do so by accident and hope that the new service will help people stay on the right side of the law.
Road users can be fined up to £1000 for driving a vehicle without a current MOT and the only exceptions to this are if you are driving the vehicle to a pre-arranged MOT test or to and from somewhere to be repaired.
